Rafael Mariano Grossi

After decades of experience in non-proliferation and disarmament, Dr. Rafael Mariano Grossi became Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency in December 2019 and has since been elected unanimously to a second term.
While Ambassador of Argentina to Austria and Argentine Representative to the IAEA and other international organizations, Dr. Grossi was presidentâdesignate of the 2020 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the NonâProliferation of Nuclear Weapons. He was president of the Nuclear Suppliers Group and presided over the Diplomatic Conference of the Convention of Nuclear Safety, securing unanimous approval for the Vienna Declaration on Nuclear Safety.
He also served in high-level positions in the Argentine Foreign Service and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.
Dr. Grossi is a strong proponent of gender balance in the nuclear field. He holds a PhD in international relations, international history and politics from the University of Geneva, Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies.
IAEA was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005 for "for their efforts to prevent nuclear energy from being used for military purposes and to ensure that nuclear energy for peaceful purposes is used in the safest possible way."
