For the celebration of the 90th anniversary of the Nobel prizes, the Norwegian Nobel Committee brought together a very distinguished group of Nobel peace laureates and academic scholars. The group discussed issues such as the history of the Cold War, the past, present and future roles of arms races and regional conflicts, as well as some of the most likely new dimensions in international relations, particularly human rights, environmental questions, and Third World debt.

This book is based on the Nobel Symposium, and presents, in addition to Willy Brandt's introductory address, scholarly analyses by historians and political scientists who are foremost in their fields and who carry a profound concern for the future of mankind.
